Log Cabins from former East European countries is a tricky subject…

Its not all about wood and how cheap a cabin can get that is the factor here, its also about the cheapness of labour and the conditions of the factories that produce these cabins!

Wood

This is the first point of call, is cabins derived from East European countries (including former nation of Russia) the same as from the Nordic countries of Scandinavia. Well No, its not.

Were not saying that the wood from Europe is all bad, we are saying, however, that this wood has to be inspected before a solid purchase can be done, and how do you do that? We have a friend that went to Lithuania to look at a couple of projects, she bought from one of the factories on the presumption that the wood there would be used for her cabin, was it, well, without resorting to a laboratory analysis (she didn’t pick up a sample whilst on the trip) she cant say!

Be aware that all wood is not the same, Swedish cabin are almost all made with C24 categorized timber (strength of timber) but this is unlikely to be the same from Europe.

We also have to look at the growth rings of the timber. 15 years ago this was the major factor in terrible wood reaching the UK shores. Some timber had rings over 1.5cm which gives the timber a life expectancy of a few years instead of over 500 from Sweden! Nowadays this has, definitely changed, more and more of the timber we see has been checked and it’s not to bad.

Harvesting is a completely different kettle of fish but we wont go to far into it here, they have vast forests and also an equally vast source of cheap labour with chain saws.

Working conditions

It has to be stated that UK, West European and Nordic Scandinavian countries got a lot to say about Health and Safety. This is a good thing! Our overall working conditions has improved immeasurably over the last 40 years, this is a very good thing!!

This cannot be said to have been replicated in some Eastern European countries! If you feel that this is something that could be important in you choice of business then you might what to take a second look!

Cheapness of Log Cabins.

Well yes, the cabins from Easter Europe can be very very cheap. We are all for competitiveness but to what cost. We HAVE to look at more than just the price and the above two sections points this out.

We don’t condone East European cabins but we don’t blame them for this situation either, REMEMBERS they just came out from the cold.
